I was born in Dublin, Ireland. Because much of my work is solo, I joke about being the Robert Rodriguez of nature films. My interest in making films stems from being a musician initially (keyboard player in a rock band), then studying art history and learning to paint, which is where I really had a chance to study composition. I then became a graphic/Web designer and, when I discovered Adobe After Effects, I knew I had to do something visually with motion.
In 2001, I borrowed a friend's camera and took my five year old son out on the dock for two days and shot a short film in the vein of Charlie Chaplin about a kid who goes fishing and catches everything except a fish with a cute ending. It was called Something Fishy.
I entered a digital film competition sponsored by Adobe and came second in my category. Encouraged by this, I bought my own camera and have been shooting, reading, studying, living and breathing everything film related ever since (as an aside, I also was a finalist two years later with the same film in the Seattle Times' Three-Minute Masterpiece competition).
My local cable channel has been running The Water's Edge for the past year. A DVD of some of the films you see here is available now.
Aside from that, I haven't really actively submitted anything to competitions or festivals. I'm currently finishing up Being Disjecta and I intend on sending that out to whatever festivals are appropriate.
Going out with my camera is a magical experience. I took the time to really learn my craft and now I have no problem capturing whatever it is I'm seeing and knowing the boundaries and limitations of my tools. When you get to that stage (and believe me, one never really does, I keep learning, keep moving forward), it's like being able to catch a cluster of stars in your hand and put it in your pocket.
